A Glimpse into the Musical Journey of Tan Hooi Song

Tan Hooi Song
Almost every Chinese in Malaysia has either heard of or attended a performance by the 24 Festive Drum Troupe. They are usually invited to perform at the opening ceremonies of corporate events such as official opening of buildings, annual dinners, company functions, Chinese cultural festivals, etc. Their resounding and thunderous beat energize their hearers and bring the event to a higher plateau.

24 Festive Drum

August 18th, 2008

24 Festive Drums
Few Chinese have not heard of the 24 Festive Drums Troupe in Johor Bahru. But where did they originate from? Has anyone ever wondered about their origins?

The Concept
In 1988, there was an outstanding and visionary music teacher in Foon Yew High School in Johor Bahru. He was affectionately known to all his students as Teacher Tan (full name Tan Hooi Song). Each festive solar term was represented by a drum.

Teacher Tan Hooi Song, The Father of FoonYew Choir

August 18th, 2008

Hope to see him stand on the stage again…our teacher Tan Hooi Song

Teacher Tan Hooi Song

It’s been 14 years since schooldays, and yet memories of those “good old days” are fresh in my mind. I remember my 6 years in the Foon Yew Choir - those 6 wonderful years! Our guide and mentor was Teacher Tan. Teacher Tan is a very friendly and humorous person. He was very active in promoting music education as well as an active participant in the Malaysian Chinese community’s cultural activities. He also composed a number of theme songs for some large-scale activities. I am a fan of all his songs, especially a choral piece named “风中口占”.
